Published on March 23, 2020Updated on June 19, 2023

For all our readers, far from the Principality but already dreaming about their upcoming visit on the French Riviera ... For those who live in Monaco but not enjoying it as usual ... Here are simple ways to encourage curiosity, discovery and learning ... and for those (many of you!) who will have plenty of time during the social distancing in the upcoming weeks ... to read, watch or listen: in the meantime, discover our culture highlight of the week, quite subjective but not exhaustive to experience Monaco without leaving home.

Read

  • If you want to find out everything there is to know about the Principality’s history, then try a book which is used as a textbook by Monégasque schoolchildren. The educational and beautifully illustrated Histoire de Monaco by Thomas Fouilleron goes through key events in Monaco’s story from prehistory to the present day! Read it and you’ll soon be able to go on Mastermind with “Monaco’s History” as your specialist subject.

Watch

  • You can revise your classic films by watching all those starring Grace Kelly, wife of Rainier III and mother of Albert II. Among the masterpieces you should (re)watch are High Noon and Alfred Hitchcock’s films Dial M for Murder and To Catch a Thief.
  • The whole family can laugh at the adventures of Marty, Alex, Gloria and Melman. This time, these hilarious animals are coming to Europe. In Madagascar 3, there is even a high-speed chase through the famous tunnel in Monaco taken by drivers during the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

  • A spy in the south of France during the 1960's: you may be thinking about James Bond or OSS 117 ? Well it's not ! it's an ordinary lawyer thrown in a more than hazardous situation. Scratch One is a little-known thriller by the reference Michael Crichton. His narrative skill reveals the atmosphere of the Côte d'Azur in the middle of the 20th century.
  • The lovely story of Opéra Garnier Monte-Carlo. The Monaco performance venue completed its transformation a few years back. The coffee-table book Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Renaissance de la Salle Garnier tells the story of this venue whose events, including ballets, operas and jazz gigs, delight audiences all year round.

More to watch

  • Among all the movies that take place in Monaco, some seem fundamental ; GoldenEye is set to be a must-watch . This is the first opus in which Pierce Brosnan endorses James Bond, and the legendary suit fits him perfectly! One of the first scenes shows a breathtaking chase on the heights of Monaco: the Principality takes shape. We also discover the Casino de Monte-Carlo where the spy play (and wins) a challenging baccarat. You can still enjoy the Baccarat, and you can also order a martini vodka ... but of course, "shaken and not stirred" !
  • Ocean's Twelve, the extraordinary next instalment in the adventures of Danny Ocean and his crew, takes us all over Europe to Amsterdam, Rome, Paris and more. Cap-Martin and the Casino de Monte-Carlo were actually used as filming locations.
  • It's back to the F1 Grand Prix with Iron Man 2, in which racing team leader Tony Stark decides to just take the wheel instead of his driver. The Circuit de Monaco becomes the scene of a totally different kind of battle...
