2017 Rose Ball

H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, President of the Princess Grace Foundation, has asked her friend Karl Lagerfeld to design the 2017 annual Rose Ball. Together they came up with Art Nouveau, thereby paying tribute to one of the art world’s most elegant artistic and architectural movements: the Vienna Secession.

The innovative style, which uses light colours and clean lines, was widespread in Austria and then all of Europe between 1892 and 1906. Several artists at the forefront of the movement stood out for their ideal lines: Joseph Olbrich and the Secession Building, architecture by Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser and Gustav Klimt. The emblematic profile of Mela Koehler, a young artist who was a student of the graphic artist Moser, is represented here in a sketch for a postcard by Wiener Werkstätte in 1914.

The very realistic decorative style is inspired by the legendary glamour of sumptuous Monaco parties and influenced by the architectural style of Josef Hoffmann and the Vienna Workshop: Wiener Werkstätte.
