Céu and the El Gusto Orchestra at the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival 2014

The Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group is pleased to announce Céu and the El Gusto Orchestra on stage at the Opéra Garnier de Monte-Carlo on Thursday 27 November 2014, as part of the 9th Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival!

Céu

Ceu à MonacoThe road, encounters, loneliness and the existential mythology of traveling are Ceu’s sources of inspiration.

The young Brazilian penned her third album, “Caravana Sereia Bloom” (2012), evoking more psychedelic works from the beginnings of Tropicalism, a popular 1970s Brazilian music or Latin music and the melancholy musings of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s bossa nova.

Céu owes her international fame to her re-writing of the samba, which can be sampled in her first album, « Céu » (2005).

For her latest album, she choses to draw her musical inspiration from Nordeste. Guitar riffs and popular songs of her region are re-worked into luxuriant reggae grooves.

A Bob Marley and Jamaica fan since her youngest age, Céu has enriched her musical vocabulary and explores a plethora of Latin sounds–cumbia, lambada, carimbó, brega and guitars encountered on the northern borders of her country.

El Gusto Orchestra

In accordance with QUIDAM MUSIC

Orchestre El Gusto« El Gusto » tells the story of jewish and muslim musicians who, separated for 50 years, are now reunited thanks to their shared passion for Châabi music.

« El Gusto » is a human adventure and an encounter between director Safinez Bousbia and an Algerian craftsman, Monsieur Ferkioui.

When he was a young musician he took part, along with his long lost Jewish and Muslim friends, in the first Châabi music course offered in the Alger Music Academy run by the founder of popular music El Anka.

Touched by his story and after two years of investigation, Safinez found the musicians. What was intended to be a simple reunion concert in 2007 in Marseille, blossomed into the rebirth of Châabi music, and the creation of El Gusto.

Discovering El Gusto on stage is truly a musical and human experience in itself. Traditionally, Chaabi orchestras are composed of 5 to 10 musicians. However, for the first time, El Gusto presents a magnificent Orchestra in scope (about twenty musicians), which embodies the joy and the good disposition of the working-class districts from where the musicians originate.

Together, they hum songs, striking illustrations of weddings, café atmospheres or from the port and the dockers life, using typical and atypical instruments such as the banjo, Qanun, Mandola, darbuka and the ney
