Film showing of Weekend of a Champion at the Grimaldi Forum

Under the High Patronage of H.S.H. the Princess of Hanover, the Audiovisual Archives of Monaco organised, in the presence of Roman Polanski and Sir Jackie Stewart on 16 December at 20.00, an exceptional showing of the documentary Weekend of a Champion, with the participation of the Automobile Club of Monaco. This film’s first world showing was at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

Passionate about cars, film director Roman Polanski became friends with Scottish race car driver and 1969 Formula 1 world champion Jackie Stewart. Stewart was en route to win his second title at the time, and Polanski obtained permission to follow him during the Grand Prix weekend. It was during the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix – that Stewart would end up winning – that the film director’s camera would become the intimate friend of the champion at the height of his glory, both on and off the track. In 1972, the film, entitled Afternoon of a Champion, won the prize for best documentary at the Berlin festival. However, the film would never be launched commercially.

Found in the archives of a London laboratory where it was almost destroyed in 2009, the negatives of the forgotten film were re-edited by Polanski with the help of his current team, including Hervé de Luze, and completed by his reunion with Jackie Stewart 40 years later.

The result was a rare moment of intimacy in the private life of a talented athlete at the peak of his success. Forty years later, Polanski and Stewart were reunited and talked in a natural, unique and inimitable way about the way the sport had changed so much over the years.
