Monte-Carlo Society Winter 2015

When the Société des Bains de Mer invited me to welcome you in this magazine I was absolutely delighted to accept. Monaco’s art and culture, the feature of this issue, are topics dear to my heart, touchstones even in a constantly changing world.

In this, Monaco’s position in again unusual, for there must be few places where culture is so concentrated in such a small area: the Principality’s 2 square kilometres offer the quintessence of the arts all year round. I’m thinking of the wonderment incited by performances of the Opera, the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Monte-Carlo Ballet and by the Grimaldi Forum’s exhibitions, of the headline events such as the Monte-Carlo Sporting Summer Festival and the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival, of the creativity of the Printemps des Arts festival and of the works awarded Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco prizes each year.

I think too of the spirit that I, with my team and the artists, am trying to infuse into the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. The Lab at Villa Sauber, asking the vital question: “What kind of Museum for tomorrow?”, and the poetic work of Fausto Melotti at Villa Paloma are two examples of what we are devising for you. In that same spirit we are participating in the “Cinema Tuesdays”, an Archives Audiovisuelles de Monaco initiative demonstrating the Principality’s close links with cinema.

Before you turn the pages to read about the creative spirit that inspires us here, I cannot omit to mention the tremendous role that HRH the Princess of Hanover plays in supporting and developing art and culture in the Principality.

I wish you the pleasantest of stays in Monaco.
