Remember Shakti at the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival 2013

The Monte-Carlo SBM Group is pleased to announce the band Remember Shakti on stage at the Opéra Garnier de Monte-Carlo on Thursday 28 November 2013, as part of the 8th Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival!

Shakti BandThe reformation of one of the most legendary bands of the 1970s in 2013 will be one of the biggest events of this year’s Monte-Carlo jazz festival. With “Remember Shakti“, John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain celebrate 40 years of friendship and music since the creation of Shakti which had a colossal impact on the world scene with its unique acoustic fusion mixing eastern and western musical sounds. They were the forerunners of their generation.

In 1975, John McLaughlin formed a power group aimed at combining Indian language and instruments with jazz elements, while creating a fusion of music from the south and north of India, combining Hindustani and Carnatic music.

This is Shakti, a Sanskrit word meaning strength, power – or the goddess who symbolises it. A fusion between jazz and Indian music had never been such a success before. Two years later, the members of the quintet went their separate ways but the group had influenced the sound of the time.

With his companion in arms, Zakir Hussain, he reformed this legendary group at the beginning of the 2000s. “Remember Shakti” is the spellbinding revival of this quintet, composed of the original members of John McLaughlin on the guitar, Zakir Hussain on the tabla, Shankar Mahadevan on vocals, Uppalapu Shrinivas on the mandolin and Viniyakram Selvaganesh on the kanjira, the ghatam and the mridangam.

John McLaughlin, legendary English guitarist who was close to Jimi Hendrix at the end of the 1960s and Miles Davis in the 1970s, is certainly the key figure in jazz fusion. In the group he mixes Pakistani and Indian sounds while providing his own personal touch and adding various jazz elements. The alchemy is perfect and creates magical moments.
