The solar ship “PlanetSolar” ends its world tour in the port of Monaco

After setting off on September 27th, 2010, for a unique world tour, PlanetSolar will end its voyage in the port of Monaco between May 4th and 6th, 2012. It is the first solar ship to have sailed around the world functioning solely on solar energy.

Among other ports-of-call, the ship dropped anchor in Miami, Cancún, San Francisco, Sydney and Hong Kong. An ambassador for renewable energies, PlanetSolar takes advantage of its stopovers to introduce the general public to the project and heighten awareness of the importance of sustainable development.

Monaco was chosen as its point of departure and arrival due to its recognized commitment to protection of the environment and its fight against global warming.

Since it signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1998, ratified on February 27th, 2006, the Principality has made continuous efforts to further sustainable development in various fields such as deforestation, electric vehicles and adapted infrastructures, improved management of energy and water, the HEQ construction and the organization of fairs and conferences focusing more and more on “green” issues.

Within this context, Monte-Carlo SBM is rallying its teams to support sustainable  procedures, particularly with its “Be Green” project, and backs the commitment together with the Monégasque government, the town-hall, members of the tourist  industry and private enterprises. As part of these actions, Monte-Carlo SBM is proud to sponsor PlanetSolar alongside the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
