Top 6 green activities to enjoy in the Monaco sunshine

Published on November 28, 2018Updated on December 07, 2023

Eco-friendly luxury – mission impossible? Go Sustainable is the name of the third Sustainable Development Charter and sets the scene for the environmentally-friendly approach implemented both inside and out at Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer establishments. We make protecting the environment a priority. So, who’s up for joining us in the sunshine to enjoy this paradise...eco-style?

#1 Eat well, beautifully, and organic

Just like you, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer loves food that is organic, healthy and sustainable. So head to the Blue Bay where you can enjoy fresh-picked fruit, vegetables and herbs from the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort’s organic kitchen garden. For seafood lovers, head to the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo and L’Hirondelle for an exceptional meal. You are even safe in the knowledge that all seafood has been sourced responsibly, as they have signed the Mr. Goodfish charter!

#2 Learn about urban farming

While we’re on the subject, Marcel Ravin's organic kitchen garden was designed – in close collaboration with the chef himself – by Terre de Monaco, which is setting up eco-friendly fruit and vegetable patches in sunny spots and on rooftops all over the city. They also offer herb and edible flower tasting sessions...hooray for urban farming! In the last few months, a garden has also been set up on the roof at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo. Pansies, nasturtiums, borage, and other edible flowers grow there, which are used daily to garnish the dishes at the L’Hirondelle restaurant. What a way to go green!

#3 Watch some (fuel-free!) motor racing

Come to the Monaco ePrix, the city’s Formula E world championship race, which runs entirely on electricity.  The traditional Grand Prix route has even been made shorter to reduce the racing cars’ energy consumption as much as possible. Mark your calendars! The next ePrix race will take place on the 30th of April 2022.

#4 Travel green

Do you need to get to the Place du Casino from the Monte-Carlo Beach? Why not try a low-impact way to travel and rent a bicycle or electric car? They’re the future! They’re also a great way to enjoy an eco-friendly bike ride.

#5 Waste-free indulgence

In 2016, Monaco set up the “La Petite Boite” scheme, a doggy-bag system to avoid creating waste. Known as “La Gourmet Box” in all Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer establishments, the scheme means you can carry on enjoying your meal, even when you get home.

#6 Enjoy lush biodiversity

Monaco is undoubtedly a lively city with a buzzing scene, but hidden within it are also oases of green and blue which are a must-see! Two examples? First is the garden at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and its exotic treasures. Walking through the natural heritage provided by the trees and admiring other incredible plants is an opportunity that’s not to be missed. Second is the marine protected area in Larvotto, kept in perfect condition by the AMNP (the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature), with its lush flora and fauna.
