Antibes is a city steeped in culture with a town centre full of historical attractions. Le Vieil Antibes, in particular, bears witness to typical Provencal and Maralpine architecture, with its ramparts, old houses and colourful shutters. Come and stroll through the streets,
contemplate the dwellings, and walk atop the legendary walls that have carved out the very special profile of this place...
Founded by the Greeks of Phocaea, Antipolis was later conquered and fortified by the Romans - traces of these buildings can still be seen near the Porte de l'Orme. Various rulers have added or rebuilt high stone walls and bastions, reinforcing the feeling of walking through a citadel.
In the Vieil Antibes area, with several monuments side by side, transport visitors through the ages just by crossing to the other side of the street. Between the rue du Saint-Esprit and the rue de l’Horloge, discover the renowned Notre-Dame-de-l’Immaculée-Conception Cathedral, with its intricately carved wooden doors, pink façade and ochre walls, and the Sarrazine Tower, a 30-metre-high defensive structure built three centuries before the place of worship that stands opposite. A visit to the Saint-Bernardin Chapel is also highly recommended: beyond its neo-Gothic façade, a sumptuous interior awaits, noted for its colourful ceilings and Baroque paintings.

An absolute must-see: Overlooking the sea, the Château Grimaldi embodies the soul of the historic city. Built on the ancient acropolis, it was later owned by the Genoese aristocrats who gave their name to the castle, and a branch of whose family now reigns in Monaco. Today, it houses the Picasso Museum, with almost 250 paintings and drawings, some of which were directly influenced by the natural colours of Antibes. A perfect combination of modern art and Mediterranean heritage.
1 - Begin with a leisurely exploration of the town via the Avenue de Verdun, the Porte Marine, and the Promenade Amiral de Grasse, before taking a stroll along the coastline to admire Antibes’ most notable monuments.
2 - After a visit to the Picasso Museum in the Château Grimaldi, head for the Cours Masséna, to enjoy the aromas, colours and quality of produce in the Provencal market which takes place every day except Mondays in autumn and winter.
3 - Head for the impressive Port Vauban marina, where some of the world's largest and most luxurious yachts are regularly moored on "billionaires' quay".
4 - Near the ramparts, take in the superb views over the Mediterranean, before stopping off at Plage de la Gravette, a small beach of fine sand and crystal-clear water, in contrast to other bathing spots on the Côte d’Azur thanks to its calm and authentic waterside setting.
