Our responsible commitments to Sustainable Development

Go Sustainable !

Committed for over 17 years to an environmentally-friendly and voluntarist community‑based approach, Groupe Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer signed, on 27 October 2022, its fourth Sustainable Development Charter for the period 2022-2026: Go Sustainable.

Its new Sustainable Development Charter focuses on 4 priorities:

  • Managing Sustainable Development, with the aim of structuring our approach and aligning our commitments with those of the Principality; pursuing our CSR certifications and rolling out training on sustainable development issues for the Group’s staff.
  • Communicating with our customers and stakeholders more widely and in a more transparent manner, and developing new eco-responsible offers for customers.
  • Decarbonation, with the objective of reducing our direct greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, via an action plan that covers purchasing, electric transport, the circular economy, waste reduction at source, development of renewable energy sources and auditing our digital impact.
  • Showcasing and preserving our natural heritage, by conserving our potable water resources, withdrawing any replaceable hazardous product, practising controlled management of Product End of Life, recycling waste and supporting local biodiversity projects (honey, vegetable gardens, LPO bird sanctuaries).

An ambitious programme aligned with the commitments of the Principality’s National Pact for Energy Transition (PNTE), signed by Groupe SBM in January 2019, hotel managers in March 2018 and Thermes Marins in January 2023. The PNTE focuses notably on:

  • Transport, with the development of low-carbon transport modes;
  • Waste, via a policy of active recycling, waste reduction and combating food waste;
  • Energy, by means of energy-saving measures and the development of renewable energy sources.
4th sutainable development charter

The Group’s employees, together with their “Green Teams”, are also striving on a daily basis to implement the Group’s commitments and apply good environmental practices. This work has delivered the following results:

Green Globe Certifications
The commitment of Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has been recognised since 2014 via an ambitious certification process. Eight establishments have thus been awarded Green Globe certification, an internationally recognised certification designed for the luxury travel and tourism sector: the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo have been consecutively certified as Gold Standard for over 5 years, but also the Monte-Carlo Beach awarded by the Platinium standard in 2023. The Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo and the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo received the prestigious certification in spring 2019, followed by the Café de Paris Monte-Carlo in late 2019 as the first restaurant in the world to have applied the Green Globe Restaurants standards. Certification of the Groupe Monte-Carlo SBM head office was obtained in summer 2021 and that of the One Monte-Carlo Conference Centre in summer 2022. Lastly, the Casino Monte-Carlo is currently preparing for certification, the Group’s long-term aim being to achieve certification of the entire Resort.

Overview of consumptions

Auditing water and energy consumption

Our consumption of gas has reduced by 61%, electricity by 15% and water by 45% for the fiscal year 2021-2022 as compared with 2006-2007; we produce renewable electricity with the photovoltaic panels of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and the One Monte-Carlo. We have been taking a consistent approach to reducing water consumption and recovering water following the 2022 drought, notably at the Monte-Carlo Beach.

Combating food waste

And because combating food waste concerns everyone, Groupe Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has adopted the “Gourmet Box”, a personalised version of the Petite Boite Monégasque, originally launched by the Mayor of Monaco, for customers to take home their leftovers after lunch or dinner. A simple way of getting customers to adopt the “doggy bag” habit!

Well-being on a plate

Sustainable development is also well-established in the Resort’s kitchens, thanks to the Chefs, who promote healthy and authentic cooking based on fresh, local and seasonal products. In addition, all allergens are specifically stated on our menus.

The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort has its own organic vegetable garden, in close collaboration with Monegasque start-up TerraE, which designs urban organic vegetable gardens. The Monte-Carlo Beach works in partnership with the Domaine d’Agerbol gardens at kilometer zero.

Lastly, the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo and its restaurant L’Hirondelle, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, the Café de Paris Monte-Carlo and the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo have all signed the Mr.Goodfish commitment, aimed at respecting marine resources and promoting fish obtained by sustainable fishing.

Preserving biodiversity: a priority for us

From green spaces showcasing Mediterranean flowers, to the Larvotto Marine Reserve managed by the Association Monégasque pour la Protection de la Nature, and the Pointe de la Vigie of Monte-Carlo Beach, classed as an LPO (Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux) bird reserve since 2019, the Groupe Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer is fortunate enough to be surrounded by an exceptional natural heritage, which needs respecting and protecting. The green spaces are maintained without pesticides and, moreover, include several centuries-old trees along the Monegasque Trees Trail (https://www.visitmonaco.com/en/routes-and-walks/22134/the-heritage-trees-trail).
