Committed to a proactive environmental and societal approach that has promoted ever greener luxury for over 10 years, the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group launched its 3rd Sustainable Development Charter in 2018: Go Sustainable.

The Group’s employees and their “Green Teams” work with you every day to develop practices that are more environmentally-friendly. Among the commitments that concern you the most:

  • • Efficient and responsible management of water and energy resources
  • • A genuine policy of sorting and recycling that promotes reuse and limits waste
  • • A food offer that focuses on naturalness and well-being
  • • Respect and preservation of our natural heritage and its biodiversity

Water and energy are key challenges for a major luxury resort

In just a few years, the establishments belonging to the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group have significantly reduced their water and energy consumption. For example, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort has reduced its energy expenditure by 30% in just 8 years! The Group also differentiates itself by purchasing clean energy (100 % of the electricity certified as from renewable sources) and offsetting its gas consumption. Finally, water consumption has fallen by 43% in 10 years.
 

When waste becomes a resource

The Group has embarked on a major policy of recycling and recovering its waste with 10 different sorted waste collections. For 2017-2018, these collections have resulted in:

  •  491 tonnes of glass
  • 49.3 tonnes of paper
  • 9.4 tonnes of household waste
  • 33,475 litres of edible oils recovered
  • 545 kg of used batteries recovered
  • 6 m3 of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

And because the fight against food waste concerns us all, the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group has adopted the “Gourmet Box”, a customised version of the “Petite Boite Monégasque” initially launched by the Monaco town hall, which consists of a box for taking home the leftovers from a meal after lunch or dinner. A simple way to make the “doggy bag” a habit for its customers!

 

Well-being on the plate

Sustainable development is also evident in the Resort’s kitchens thanks to Chefs who promote a healthy and authentic cuisine, using local, seasonal and fresh products. All allergens are also specified on our menus.

The Group is a pioneer in terms of organic cuisine with the starred restaurant Elsa at the Hotel Monte-Carlo Beach, which has been Ecocert certified since 2013 with its fully organic food, unique at this level. The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort also boasts its own organic kitchen garden, working in close partnership with the start-up Terre de Monaco which creates urban organic gardens.

Finally, the Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo and its restaurant L’Hirondelle, together with the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort have signed the Mr Goodfish commitment to respect marine resources with an emphasis on fish from sustainable sources.

Preserving biodiversity, a priority for everyone

From the green spaces showcasing Mediterranean flora to the Marine protected areas of the Larvotto managed by the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature, including its pine forest and more, the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group is surrounded by an exceptional natural heritage that must be respected and protected. The green spaces are maintained without pesticides and also include several hundred-year-old trees along the Monaco Heritage Tree Trail. For several years, the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer’s commitment has been recognised through an ambitious certification process. 3 of our establishments have the internationally-recognised Green Globe certification designed for the luxury travel and tourism industry: the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and the Monte-Carlo Beach are Gold Standard for the 5th consecutive year and the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo for the 3rd year. The Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo, the Café de Paris Monte-Carlo, the Buddha Bar and the Sporting d’Eté are also now working to obtain this prestigious certification within the next two years.

In addition to these certifications and mobilising its employees, the Group’s commitments under its 2018-2021 Environmental Charter also include educating its customers and stakeholders, responsible purchases, clean mobility and reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG). In this area, we are part of the overall policy of the Principality of Monaco which is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
